Demand for commercial property in Wollongong's Crown Street Mall could soon soar, as $4.9 million of investment is announced for refurbishments.

Councillor David Brown, acting lord mayor, revealed that the project is set to get underway early next year.

"The city centre is a vital part of Wollongong and the refurbishment of the Mall is a key step in supporting the redevelopment and revitalisation of the city centre," he commented.

Among the work that is set to be undertaken is the development of an outdoor dining space, as well as an informal performance area and public art installation.

Efforts are also to be made to promote Crown Street as a pedestrian area and to remove clutter so that people can navigate the space with greater ease.

It was also recently announced that work would get underway at Helensburgh library to upgrade shelving and make it more accessible to local residents.

Refurbishments recently undertaken at the facility included repainting, the installation of a new carpet and creating WiFi computer access.

Plans are in place to reopen the library to the public on July 2.
