Plans to expand the Sunshine Coast Airport are already in place, with the terms of reference for its Environmental Impact Statement being finalised.
This means the improvements can get underway, which should eventually lead to more visitors heading to the Sunshine Coast - bringing business to those with commercial property in the region.
Not only this, but the expansion is also expected to create thousands of jobs and strengthen the economy over the coming decades.
Mayor Mark Jamieson commented: "Work will soon start on studies needed for the much-anticipated Airport Expansion Project - including the new east-west runway.
"We anticipate construction of the new runway could start by around 2015 with the new runway operational by around 2020."
Upon his election earlier this year, Mr Jamieson pledged that creating jobs would be his main concern in his new role.
Speaking at the opening of the Sunshine Coast Business Expo, he said that the aim was to strengthen the economy and protect the environment, therefore making the area a better place to live, work and do business.
As a result, demand for commercial real estate along the Sunshine Coast could be improved.
