An inner city Melbourne housing estate is set to receive a cash injection of $274,000 for major upgrades.

The Horace Petty public housing estate in Prahran will undergo works including the redevelopment of a playground and the introduction of an elderly visitation program.

First home buyers or people looking to add to their property investment portfolio may be attracted to the area after the government's announcement on June 14.

Minister for housing Wendy Lovell said redevelopment to the housing estate would include a $150,000 upgrade to the Prahran adventure playground, $100,00 for the a new community hub and IT project and $24,000 for the implementation of an elderly visitation program.

Ms Lovell said: "The exciting thing about this announcement is that there's something for people at all stages of their lives."

"From children to parent, jobseekers to the elderly, we're partnering with local groups to deliver a more inclusive, community-focused estate."

The Horace Petty Estate dates back to the 1960s  and 1970s and has been the focus of a government renewal plan previously.

Bordered by Bray and Simmons Streets, and Malvern and Surrey Roads in South Yarra, the estate is in a prime inner city location, close to all amenities, schools and public transport.
