In great news for Australia, four capital cities in the country have featured on the list of top ten most liveable cities in the world.

This is encouraging news for those thinking of buying a property in Australia, and may help to attract more international migrants looking to shift countries.

Melbourne took out the top spot for the third year in a row, completing a hat-trick for liveability in the world. This capital city beat Vienna, Vancouver, Toronto and Calgary, who all held close scores.

The Economist Intelligence Unit Survey included 140 cities around the globe, and assessed criteria across five categories to provide a score out of 100. These included stability, healthcare, infrastructure, education and culture and environment.

Melbourne managed to reach a total result of 97.5 and received perfect scores for infrastructure, healthcare and education.

This result has been welcomed by the Victorian Minister for Planning Matthew Guy, who stated that it's the city's thriving culture that makes Melbourne such a great place for people to live.

"Our great city has a vibrant multicultural community, a celebrated arts scene and world famous food and wine," said Mr Guy in an August 28 statement.

"Victoria is the major events state; and our prestigious calendar of events brings visitors to our state, puts dollars into our economy, and jobs into our businesses."

Mr Guy said that the state government is not going to continue with a "business as usual approach" after hearing these results and will continue to place its focus in improving the city well into the future.

"The coalition government is reforming metropolitan planning and putting forward a long term vision for our capital city," Mr Guy commented.

Earlier this year, the state government announced that it will be creating a new metropolitan planning strategy for the city over the next two years.

Some of the key areas of concern that will be addressed in the strategy will be economic growth, housing, transport, environmental protection and infrastructure. This will be to accommodate for the many people shifting to the area to buy residential real estate and work in the region.

Australia had three other capital cities to rank on the top 10 list, including Sydney, Perth and Adelaide.

At number five, Adelaide scored a total of 96.6, while Sydney and Perth followed at numbers seven and nine with results of 96.1 and 95.9 points respectively.
