Tasmanian families and business owners can look forward to more competitive energy rates within the next year.

Legislation was introduced to state parliament yesterday (April 9) in support of electricity consumers.

Minister for energy and resources Bryan Green said the Electricity Reform Implementation Bill 2013 will remove the monopoly for home owners and commercial properties currently held by Aurora Energy.

He is confident that these changes will bring noticeable improvements for people throughout Tasmania.

For renters, home buyers and commercial property managers, this means more choice and maybe even extra money in the bank.

"We see the benefits of competition every time we shop at the supermarket, and it’s no different with our energy bills", said Energy Supply Association of Australia (ESAA) General Manager Kieran Donoghue.

Donoghue said the key to the changeover will be for local government to adequately inform home owners, rental property dwellers and commercial property managers of their available choices over the coming months.

Mr Green had similar sentiments, saying that "customers will have confidence in the market and the ability to make informed, educated choices".

The changes will begin mid-year, in order for new retailers to acquire customers starting on January 1st 2014.
