Surfers Paradise shopping centre to get $6.86m upgrade

November 04, 2011

One Surfers Paradise shopping centre could undergo redevelopment work as early as March 2012 if plans to upgrade the commercial space go ahead.

The redevelopment, which was recommended earlier in October by the Gold Coast Council's Engineering Services Committee, would see the Cavill Mall receive a makeover valued at $6.86m.

According to divisional councillor Susie Douglas, the mall upgrades - which include plans for the use of stencilled, coloured asphalt pavement - could "give a tremendous boost" to Surfers Paradise.

"Cavill Mall is a focal point for visitors to Surfers Paradise and this long-overdue makeover is a most welcome one," she explained, stating that the redevelopment will also cut down on "visual clutter" by creating more open spaces and incorporating landscape elements.

Douglas also added that the commercial property redevelopment would complement other recent work carried out in Surfer's Paradise, including upgrades to the foreshore, as well as the Hilton hotel and Soul developments.

Another newly-renovated commercial property on the Gold Coast could be complete and open to the public before the end of the financial year, the local authority announced this week.

The proposed Tradewinds building - a renovated cafe-restaurant - will continue to be developed by the council and the South Stadbroke Island facility could soon be opened to complement the camping and kiosk areas in the precinct.
