Clover Moore talks on "critical" sustainability in the commercial sector

November 16, 2011

One of Sydney's leading figures in the drive to make commercial property more green-friendly has agreed that the cost of ongoing works is far outweighed by the benefits.

Lord mayor Clover Moore delivered a keynote speech at the City Conversations meeting held at Sydney Town Hall on November 9.

The heading for the meeting was How the Carbon Price Affects You and involved a number of industry specialists and commentators including the minister for climate change Greg Combet and CEO of Sustainable Business Australia Andrew Peterson.

During her opening address Moore said that - while she understood that the issue was a sensitive one - there were many opportunities for innovation that could drive an intelligent economy.

On the policy side, she said that Sydney city has a range of programs in place that were designed to assist commercial property owners to make the switch to more sustainable operating practices.

Moore asserted: "Office tenants are catered for with the CitySwitch Green Office program to help reduce energy consumption and the Better Buildings Partnership was formed in July this year, working with the owners of almost 60 per cent of our commercial office space to achieve our 2030 goals."

She said that some business leaders had already taken it upon themselves to deliver their organisations with "stand-alone local energy systems" to service their operations.
