Barangaroo construction gets underway

November 02, 2011

More than six years after its initial proposal, work has finally begun on the Sydney harbour-front redevelopment project that will eventually hold enough office space to accommodate 23,000 workers in its first stage alone.

Construction crews at Barangaroo were given the green light to start work on October 25, with bulldozers moving in to clear the way for a range of construction efforts to begin.

Developments in the area will include a number of high-rise buildings offering premium office space with unmatched views of the harbour, world-class parks, residential dwellings, retail outlets and cafes.

Premier of New South Wales Barry O'Farrell visited the site, observing the work of excavators, piling rigs and crawling cranes before commenting on the momentous nature of the new development.

O'Farrell asserted: "This is as historic an occasion as the laying of the first stone on the Harbour Bridge or laying of the first stone at the Sydney Opera House.

"As well as being a great place to live and visit, Barangaroo will form the newest hub of Sydney's financial services."

Due for completion in 2015, the 7.5 hectares of development will produce 490,000 square metres of floor space - most of which will be taken up by commercial offices.
