Prominent commercial Sydney property gets green retail rating

November 14, 2011

A well-known retail location in the heart of Sydney is set to receive industry recognition for its innovative design and execution that sees it achieve remarkable targets in reducing carbon emissions and water consumption.

The Westfield shopping complex on Pitt Street Mall has just gained a five-star Green Star Retail Centre v1 ranking from the Green Building Council Australia (GBCA).

The certification comes after the facility underwent a massive upgrade that saw the deployment of the country's largest on-site urban recycled water treatment systems ever installed in a retail environment.

This technology allows the centre to use around 80 per cent less water, while a dedicated tri-generation plant - the first of its kind used in this kind of commercial - allows the centre to reduce greenhouse emissions by approximately 35 per cent.

Speaking on the certification, chief executive of the GBCA Romilly Madew said the Green Star recognised the vision and commitment displayed by the retail property owner in addressing the issues surrounding commercial energy and water consumption.

Madew asserted: "We look forward to seeing the benchmarks set by Westfield Sydney integrated into many other shopping centre projects throughout Australia."
