Chinatown precinct set to receive ongoing commercial property research

December 01, 2011

A well-known business sector in Sydney is set to be the focus of a number of multi-disciplinary studies over the next few years.

Chinatown will be receiving attention from a range of professional bodies thanks to the new research project announced by the city council.

The Centre for Cultural Research will be receiving $75,000 over the next three years to deliver a report covering the locale's changing identity in response to global influences and how it reflects Australia's place in the Asia-Pacific region.

Speaking on the study - titled "Sydney's Chinatown in the Asian Century: Spaces, Networks and Identities" - lord mayor Clover Moore said that it would help improve the city by making it a desirable location to work, visit and live.

Moore asserted: "This research project gives us an opportunity to work with some of Australia's most distinguished cultural researchers, producing a long-term picture of one of Sydney's most significant cultural precincts.

"We want to encourage more visitors to Chinatown and improve the environment for local residents and workers by creating more pedestrian-friendly streets, new spaces for markets, outdoor dining and public art, and better walking and cycling links to surrounding areas."

The research will cover the commercial property practices, the evolution of Chinese product culture and the likely influence that ongoing projects will have on the region.
